What Types of Hair Transplant Procedures Exist Today?

In general, there are two methods of hair replacement, each one dictated by the method of harvesting the hair grafts: follicular unit transplantation (FUT) and follicular unit extraction (FUE). To learn more about FUE, please click here.

FUT (follicular unit transplantation), more commonly known as the strip method, harvests an entire strip of hair from the back of the head. Your surgeon then dissects the strip into individual hair grafts, which he then uses to insert into the balding areas of the head. These healthy hair grafts are implanted in a natural grouping of one to four hairs at a time.

For those seeking hair restoration, FUT is usually the best choice for patients with extensive hair loss who require a large number of grafts. FUT typically yields a higher number of hair grafts than FUE.

Why choose Dr. Ching for hair replacement?

For those interested in FUT hair restoration, it is important to seek a board-certified plastic surgeon. After graduating from the prestigious McGill University in Montreal, Dr. Shim Ching earned his medical degree from the University of British Columbia. He then completed his plastic surgery residency at McMaster University before earning his board-certification in plastic surgery. He then created Asia Pacific Plastic Surgery in Honolulu, providing a cosmetic haven for patients in Hawaii and across the world.

Throughout the FUT hair transplant process, Dr. Ching is meticulous and conservative. His eye dictates a natural result, never allowing his patients to look artificial or fake. He studies your anatomy carefully and listens to your goals, crafting a plan that will look as though you never suffered hair loss in the first place. Advantages of FUT

High Follicle Survival Rate

In hair replacement, a primary variable has been the survival of the harvested hair follicles. Follicular unit transplantation (FUT), produces the highest rate of follicle survival, in some cases up to 100%.

More Budget-Friendly

FUT is typically the most economical option for hair transplant patients. Dr. Ching can provide further insight regarding your best hair restoration option, along with the attendant costs.

Time Maximizer

Due to the high volume of individual hair implants that need to be placed, hair restoration can be quite time consuming. While FUT is certainly not short, it still significantly reduces the time patients must spend in surgery. Dr. Ching will weigh this factor against other pros and cons of FUT as well as other hair restoration procedures.

Top-Notch Hair Quality

When it comes to your hair restoration, the most important part is the outcome! FUT consistently delivers outstanding results, making it look as though you never underwent a hair transplant.

The FUT hair restoration procedure

Prior to your FUT procedure, Dr. Ching will provide full education on the procedure and everything to expect. The basic steps are as follows.

As the first step, Dr. Ching will trim the donor area. He will then use a local anesthetic to numb the scalp. He will remove a strip of follicles from the donor area. He will choose this donor area carefully, as the survival rate of implanted follicles depends upon the characteristics of the donor follicles. He will also choose this donor area with the consideration of concealing the resultant scar as well as possible.

Once Dr. Ching has the strip of donor hair follicles, he will dissect the strip into individual groupings of one to four hairs. He then precisely implants these harvested follicles in the balding areas of the scalp, taking care to ensure they flow in a natural pattern.

Finally, Dr. Ching will close the incision in the donor area.

We will walk you through the entire recovery process. Patience is key, as the recovery from hair transplantation goes through several stages. We will ensure you are well prepared for the journey ahead. With a full list of aftercare instructions and a series of follow-up appointments, we are confident your final result will be just what you’re seeking.
